To Activate prior knowledge you think about what you already know about the topic your're working on. This also includes what you have done your self, what you have read, seen on TV or at the movies, etc.
Thinking about what you already know is useful because it gives you a base to build new knowledge.
Here's an example:
The book I'm reading is called Roof Toppers. I read the title. Then I started thinking what I know about a roof. Well I know that they go on top of a house you can go on top of a roof then I think about roof toppers well the characters could go on top of the roofs? Then I read the blurb and that got me thinking about what I know of orphans and shipwrecks.
Lastly I looked at the drawing and well they are in Paris on top of a roof. I knew know that is in France and I know some things about French people.
